It was so crowded. We had some trouble getting the stroller and Grandpop in his wheelchair in and out of the elevator. We only made it to the 6th floor to see my art and meet up with some friends. Grandpop rolled himself around to check it out. He enjoyed the people watching. We ran up the stairs while Grandpop stayed behind to look at the peeps display. We couldn't get on the elevator with the wheelchair because it was so crowded. You could barely walk around the peeps display so we went back to get grandpop and get him downstairs. We saw some more friends at the Electric Stage where Demivolt was playing. Then it was time to get baby home.
Parking in the garage is convenient and only $6.00 if there is no Nationals Game. I think the price goes up for a game. We hope to get back soon to see it again. There is so much to see.

Artomatic Finishing Installation

Today we brought baby Brie to Artomatic to finish installation. Hanging artwork with a newborn has had its challenges, like breastfeeding and changing a diaper while hanging art. But I am so happy that Brie is experiencing this event.
We walked around and saw many artists at work finishing their exhibits. Thank goodness my friend Monica Stroik who shares the space next to me painted my wall for me, with help from Rick. I was hoping to hang my art two weeks ago but Brielle was born two weeks early and not everything goes as planned especially with having a baby.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_B4xHp1zjtrI/SgudGPhvoGI/AAAAAAAABj0/1eFU6V-w-iA/s200/DSC01133.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335530914123325538" />
Brielle was so good, she laid in her stroller asleep without a peep. She just ate, fell asleep in the car, mom had a nap, and her diaper was changed. It's a perfect balance that can be hard to achieve sometimes.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_B4xHp1zjtrI/SgudFxWSADI/AAAAAAAABjs/Rfvao-7BYLQ/s200/DSC01125.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335530906022182962" />
So with having the wall already painted the show hung with ease. It took almost 2 hours. The volunteers were kicking us out at 9:55. We worked til the last minute. But of course there are a few things that need to be finished. Like hooking up the lights to an extension cord/power strip and fixing some of my adhesive letters. Travis will go back and finish. He is the best.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_B4xHp1zjtrI/SgudFicVorI/AAAAAAAABjk/XpMy0Eq5Ypw/s200/DSC01124.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335530902021055154" />
Hopefully we will be able to attend on opening night with Baby Brie. It will be her first art show. It was awesome. My students asked him such great questions about the project. I was so impressed. The students responded well to him. He was so laid back. To learn more about the Fundred Project click on Fundreds
There you can get lesson plans on how to make fundreds and download a template. Students all over the United States are creating Fundreds to help raise awareness and money to address the lead in the soil issue in New Orleans, LA. In Mel Chin's Fundred Project students will have a voice about this issue through their artwork. Children will be part of a national art project.
That evening my husband and I went to the Arlington Arts Center to see Mel Chin talk about his art and introduce the Fundred Project to the arts center. Travis made a Fundred too.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_B4xHp1zjtrI/SeCI0CpGU4I/AAAAAAAABg4/zZSLykZb8D4/s200/DSC00901.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323405187195753346" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_B4xHp1zjtrI/SeCIzyhr_0I/AAAAAAAABgw/AgqhiWzUFeY/s200/DSC00900.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323405182869700418" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_B4xHp1zjtrI/SeCIzmvEplI/AAAAAAAABgo/MKFvHB9EltA/s200/DSC00899.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323405179704616530" />
The arts center will be an exhibit site for Fundreds from students in Arlington County Public Schools. A great space to see art but the walls are a little crowded. We enjoyed the show expecially the work of Bryan Collins. Go to Art Whino to get more information.
It's an unusual location for this gallery among all the retail chains, big hotels, and restuarants but it is nice to see something different in that type of space. The artwork there is also very affordable.
We had dinner at one of the restaurants and the went to the show. The show went til midnight so we didn't have to rush to get there.
Then we went to the Gaylord Hotel and went up and down the glass elevator a few times. It was fun.
Check out the website for the National Harbor to see what is there. I am sure once the weather is warmer it will be a great place to go.
National Harbor

Touchstone Gallery Opening

A large crowd attended the Touchstone Gallery opening this past Friday night. 88 artists and all of their friends, you could barely move. Also there is a lot of history there...
When we arrived to go to the show, we saw a large beautiful carousel from 1921. The park ranger gave us a tour of the building and gave us some history about the carousel. Then we ventured over to the Popcorn Gallery to see the amazing photographs of Roosevelt Island by Anthony J. and Megan D. Peritore. It's really hard to believe that there is so much wildlife on this little island on the Potomac across from Georgetown next to the Key Bridge. My husband and I enjoy going to Roosevelt Island to hike and have a picnic on the first spring day or a warm day in the fall. I definitely recommend seeing this show and checking out Glen Echo Park. We also took a peek at the swing dancing in the ballroom which is open to the public with lessons on the weekends.

Show Information
Magnificence Amidst the Metropolis: Photographs from Theodore Roosevelt Island

October 25 - November 16, 2008, Saturday and Sunday noon to 6pm

Presenter: National Park Service, Glen Echo Park Partnership, Eastern National, the Theodore Roosevelt Assoc.

Recommended Ages: All ages

Location: Popcorn Gallery

Admission: Free

Contact Phone: 301-320-1400

The Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, the National Park Service, Eastern National, and the Theodore Roosevelt Association present an exhibition of photographs of Theodore Roosevelt Island -- part of the National Park Service's George Washington Memorial Parkway -- by Anthony J. and Megan D. It was really easy to get to and there was metered parking on the street. On Friday it should be easy to park or metro to the gallery for the opening. The gallery is at the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter station on the Yellow and Green Lines. Walk 2 blocks north on 7th Street or Gallery Place-Chinatown station on the Red, Green and Yellow Lines. Walk 4 blocks south on 7th Street. It is across the street from the Zenith Gallery. If you are driving take Constitution Ave then left at 9th, right on Pennsylvania, then a left on 7th. The galley is in the first block on your left, hopefully there will be parking on the street or try a garage.
Hanging in the show is Juno, Naked Virgin, and Euterpe and Terpsichore, which are pictured in the slideshow above.
This is a group show and there will be a lot of art and a lot of people. I am not sure if that is a word? The first hour of my shift I ran around with an orange sharpie and made signs. Then I walked around and assisted people checking out. Uneventful but my calves were killing me the next day after walking around on a concrete floor for 5 hours.
Still not as bad as the 9-2am shift that I did.
Another good thing about this shift is that I got to see artomatic for one last time and saw work that I didn't see the first time.
This was my first Artomatic experience and it was wonderful. I sold a painting for $1000 and a gallery wants to show my work. I purchased two paintings from Jeanette Herrera "Mary" and "Grace". They look fabulous. I also really enjoy the art education workshops and the way Artomatic involved children. I met some wonderful people at Artomatic and I am glad I decided to do it. I got a sense of community by participating in Artomatic.
Not everything was perfect about Artomatic. First of all I don't think Artomatic needs to be open until 2am. Its not a night club it's an art show. And there were some pieces stolen from Artomatic. And I feel for the artists who have had their work taken. I had my own art stolen from a "cafe, gallery, bookstore" about 10 years ago and it is a horrible feeling and there was nothing I could do about it. So like anything we learn from life's experiences and change it the next time around.
I will continue to blog about my art experiences even though Aromatic is over. I have an upcoming show at Touchstone Gallery in July. The opening is on July 11th, 6:30pm. Hope to see you there.

Hanging with my Peeps

Today we took Izzy to Artomatic for a kids workshop on making peeps dioramas. Izzy had such a good time decorating peeps with feathers, fabric,and googlely eyes. We started our workshop touring the peeps dioramas on the 10th floor for inspiration. Then we went to the education room to create the peeps dioramas. The workshop was fabulous everyone had such a good time and all volunteers were so nice and helpful. I would definitely go to more kids workshops at artomatic. Then we took Izzy to look around. She had fun looking at the art and we found mask making on the fifth floor. Artomatic is very kid friendly.

artomatic 5/17

Today I did my second volunteer shift from 12-5. It was a much better shift than the 9pm -2am shift. It was nice to see all of the children going to the workshops on the 7th floor where you can find the Education Room. There are many workshops available for children during Artomatic on Saturdays. It was such a joy to see the pinatas that the children made when they were leaving Artomatic. Go to www.artomatic.org/kids to get more info on workshops and rsvp for events. I highly recommend bringing your children, nieces, nephews, and/or neighbor's kids to a workshop and then on a tour of Artomatic. Also the Community Drum Circle was a big family favorite. It was so cute seeing all the little ones jamming with their parents on the drums. Its great to see adults get silly with their children on the weekends when they are so seriously working all week. Awesome family activity for a Saturday. On May 31st there is a Peeps workshop for children, we are taking our friend's kid Izzy. Also check out the Peepsomatic on the 10th floor. I think we are taking an artomatic break until the 31st after a full weekend of volunteering. More photos to come after the 31st.
After our shift we walked around and looked at more art. We saw many artists like Anna Nazaretz, my husband really likes her work. He also is a big fan of Chris Bishop and Andrew Wodzianski. I think my husband has a robot fetish. I really liked the artwork of Jeannette L. Herrera. Her Mary and Grace pieces are my favorite. We also enjoyed Coincide:Contemporary Ceramics Sculpture on the 10th floor.

Artomatic 5/16

Tonight was Meet the Artist's night at Artomatic. A great night for networking and talking to people about their art. A lot of people had parties in their spaces. It was also my first volunteer shift 9pm-2am. I usually go to bed at 10pm but the all the earlier shifts were taken. It was a long night in the lobby handing out maps, counting people, and being the alcohol police, but great for people watching. Good thing my husband was there with me to keep me awake. We kinda felt like Walmart greaters. When it got past 1am the ravers were out dancing to the techno on the Electric and Cabaret Stage. Also we saw some guy talking to himself and playing with his echo in the office building lobby. I haven't been out during the witching hour in a long time, but it was entertaining. Today's shift is from 12-5 definitely a more reasonable time for me. I get cranky late at night.

Opening Night at Artomatic

Opening night was fabulous. Lots of wine, lots of party, and lots of friends. We saw so much art and need to go back and look at more. It could take you days to go through and see all of it. We took the elevator up to the 12th floor and started to make are way down via stairs. We only got to the 11th floor before we went down to the Cabaret Stage to see the Gulley Jimson Quartet. They were fun and lots of people were dancing. Then we went to the electric stage to see an awesome show from Demivolt. By then it was after midnight and it was time to go home. Will be back on Friday and Saturday this week to volunteer the 9pm-2am shift. Also another show to see on June 13th at 11pm 302Acid on the Electric Stage.

Last Day to Hang Artomatic

At 8pm Artomatic was busy. Everyone waited until the last minute but it looks great. The transformation since last Wednesday is unbelievable and amazing. I can't wait to see in on Friday night.
We finished hanging my St. Veronica painting. St Veronica is the one who wiped Jesus' face when he was carrying his cross and left his image on her veil. The other religious painting is the Virgin Mary.
We also added a shelf for a guest book so people can write down their emails if they are interested receiving more information about my work and upcoming shows.
My neighbor is a photographer Stu Rieter. His black and white work is great next to all of my color.
After we finished my space we walked around to see other artists and friends throughout the building. On the 10th floor we helped our friend Tisha Myers finish hanging her work. Photographs of her work are in the slideshow above.
The space looks fabulous and everyone's work looks great. I think this will be the best Artomatic yet. It was very nice to get positive feedback from other artists. This artist also uses the female as her subject in her art, which is nice to see how other artists see the fiugre. Priming and painting were two visits. Then last Wednesday, we went to set it up for hanging, and then tonight we hung the artwork, adhered the labels and press on letters. A lot of work but worth it.
We have met so many other artists, ran into friends' hanging art, and saw friends' art.
So many friendly people at Artomatic, its great how people walking by stop and talk to you while you are hanging your art. Its been a wonderful experience.
On the sixth floor where my art has a home, we saw the bottle cap collection by Elizabeth Morisette. Elizabeth worked with my students at Long Branch. You can follow the link on the left to Long Branch Art Gallery, then click on fence mural project to see the fabulous work she did with my students. On the twelfth floor we ran into John Figura my painting professor at VCU, to view his George Bush and Dick Cheney painting. Check out the slideshow above to see their work and Travis wandering around. We also ran into peeps from Project Peepway and Christian looks fierce as a Peep. So far it looks great. We will be back next Wednesday to hang "Veronica" she wasn't quite ready tonight. I am sure there will be so much more to see. Seeing the transformation of Artomatic has been truly an experince itself.

Hanging Artomatic

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_B4xHp1zjtrI/SBE6f2yi2yI/AAAAAAAAADc/eDQQFFC-KDc/s320/Arto600X120_Basic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192996164292762402" />

On Wednesday night my husband, Travis and myself went to Artomatic to hang my art on my 12'x8' piece of real estate. I suggest using screws if you are hanging artwork at Artomatic.
Artomatic is so awesome. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. This is such a great experience for meeting other artists and making connections. We will be back next Wednesday to finish hanging.
Artomatic is a huge art show with almost 1000 artists both visual and performing starting May 9 – June 15, 2008
Capitol Plaza I
1200 First Street, NE
Washington, DC 20002
Metro: Red Line, New York Ave., M St exit
We plan to attend opening night.
